The story

On a menu, smoky means barbecue. Here it means something else: the moment before an idea has edges, when it is still drifting about like smoke in a lit room. SmokyDream puts that moment in the name and pairs it with dream, an old word for work that has not happened yet. Imagination, in other words, with some atmosphere.

A sunlit studio with the mark on a dark wall, brushes ready and the easel already busy

The logo does most of the talking. A single eye, its iris violet and its pupil lit by a small white star, sits inside a ribbon of lilac smoke that curls up and away. Beneath it, SmokyDream is written in a loose white script that runs the two words together without a break. Make-up artists will spot a smoky eye, and they would be right to: the mark is a pun drawn rather than spoken.

The second sketch puts the mark on a dark wall in a sunlit studio: an easel holding a blur of blue and orange, jars of brushes, open sketchbooks and a box of watercolours on a long oak table, wicker lamps overhead. It is a room for Saturday-morning classes, or for a small design practice that wants its walls to look like its work. A name this soft needs a confident room, and the sketch gives it one.

Why it works

Creative studios need a name that suggests imagination without sounding twee, and SmokyDream manages it with two plain words. Smoke gives it texture and a little mystery; dream gives it permission to be strange. The logo's eye, ringed in violet smoke, also borrows from the smoky eye of make-up, which widens the field to beauty and illustration studios.

  1. An art school running weekend painting and drawing classes for adults and teenagers
  2. A small illustration and design studio that wants its brand to look as imaginative as its work
  3. A make-up artist building a studio around editorial looks, smoky eyes included
