The story

The best restaurants in most cities are not on the main road. They are down the turning a friend tells you about, past the bike racks, where a courtyard opens up under strings of bulbs and something is already on the fire. Backstreet Grill is a name for that kind of place. It promises a discovery before it promises a menu, which is the order in which people tell each other about a good night out.

Burger on one side, skewers on the other, and the street in between where the evening happens

The sketches build the evening around it. A loaded burger and fries sit on one side of a lamp-lit street, skewers spit over open flame on the other, and the logo hangs between them: a cream script over an orange 'Grill', a skyline with a water tower behind it, a kettle grill burning at the end of the word. Further in, two acoustic guitars lean against a bench under the words 'Urban Vibes', and a table of cold bottles answers with 'Laid-Back Hangout'. A launch poster sets the logo over a smoky alley with the line 'Urban Flavor. Real Fire.'

The mood is Texas, though the postcode need not be. The music can swing from a hip hop set to a country song on an acoustic guitar without the name having to choose. It suits a room where young friends come for dinner and stay to dance, where first dates turn into second ones, and where the answer to 'Where did you two meet?' is, conveniently, the name of the place.

Why it works

A backstreet carries a promise of discovery, because the good place is rarely on the high street. Paired with grill, the name sets up a casual, after-dark room where the food and the music share the billing. Two plain words, easy to say over a phone or over loud music.

Who this suits

  1. A courtyard grill planning music nights that swing from hip hop DJs to acoustic country sets
  2. A Texas-style barbecue concept opening on a city side street rather than in a mall
  3. A late-night bar kitchen that wants its food and its playlist talked about equally

Suggested uses

  • a grill restaurant
  • a live-music bar kitchen
  • a barbecue food truck
  • a sauce and rub range
