The story

Nobody sins by accident. A sin needs a reason, and the reason has to be good enough to carry the guilt home. SinnersBurger is a name for the burger that supplies it: large, generous, dripping with cheese, and unhealthy in all the ways that matter on a Friday night.

The chef's OK sign is all the absolution on offer

The mascot settles the theology. It is a grinning burger with red horns, a pointed tail and a pitchfork, and above its head floats a glowing halo. That is the face of someone who knows exactly what they are doing and has already forgiven themselves. Beneath it runs the line "SINFULLY DELICIOUS", and on the wall of the sketched shop a neon sign reads "Eat & Repent", which at least puts things in the right order.

The sketches set the brand in a warm, dark room of brick and hanging lamps, with branded cups, boxes and sauce bottles crowding the counter. In the first, a chef gives an OK sign over a burger and fries. In the second, the chef has stepped out and the devil-burger has taken his place, as if the logo had started its own shift.

A name this cheeky belongs somewhere relaxed rather than polished: the place locals guard as their own and still take visiting friends to, across town, for the burger they will spend the next morning apologising for.

Why it works

Indulgence has always been the real pitch of fast food, but few names admit it out loud. SinnersBurger does, with a grin, and turns the guilt into part of the fun rather than a reason to stay away. The word is known to every English speaker and loose enough to carry a relaxed, slightly cheeky room.

Who this suits

  1. A late-night burger joint that wants to be the guilty pleasure locals recommend to visitors
  2. A relaxed bar kitchen with a loaded-fries and double-cheese menu
  3. A street-food brand whose devil mascot can carry stickers, sauce labels and T-shirts

Suggested uses

  • a casual burger restaurant
  • a late-night delivery kitchen
  • a hot sauce range
  • mascot merchandise
